Mission East is an international relief and development organisation working in crisis-affected countries in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and Asia. The role of Director of Communications & Fundraising is a critical role in Mission East’s senior management structure, and will combine leadership of our private Fundraising, Supporter Engagement, Communications, Press and Brand activities. Via development and leadership of an audience-led marketing strategy which is in keeping with our Christian ethos and values and which showcases our work with dignity and integrity, the role will bring together Mission East’s existing private fundraising and communications capabilities and align them to maximise private income and supporter engagement via an impactful, inspiring and engaging approach. 

Role Purpose / overall responsibility:

The Director of Communications & Fundraising will be responsible for driving the strategic development, delivery and evaluation of all aspects of Mission East’s communication and fundraising activities with the aim of building the global reputation, profile and income of Mission East’s work with all our stakeholder audiences, whether international or Danish (donors, funders, private sector, media, supporters, and the public) and to inspire increased support and engagement with our work.  

Additionally, as a lead role within the Copenhagen office, the Director of Communications and Fundraising will also hold responsibility for day to day operational running and compliance matters with the Copenhagen office, including issues relating to annual staff welfare feedbacks and follow-ups.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Build and oversee the overarching Mission East communications & fundraising strategy ensuring the strategy reflects Mission East’s Christian organisational ethos and values, and Mission, Vision and Direction.
  • Development of clear objectives to deliver the communications & fundraising strategy and oversee their delivery and the on-going evaluation of progress, including digital outputs to ensure Mission East stay abreast of new developments within communications and fundraising.
  • Provision of regular updates and briefings to Management Team and Board, as necessary.
  • Implementation & coordination of communications & fundraising strategy, workplans and activities with Managing Director, other Mission East teams (Operations/Programmes, Finance, HR, IT) and Mission East Deutschland via Management Team meetings and additional regular interaction.
  • Provision of day to day operational leadership for the Copenhagen office, including oversight of health and safety and other administrative compliance requirements for the smooth and professional running of the office.
  • Participation in Management Team meetings and business.
  • Provision of input to other team strategies as appropriate.

Communications & Fundraising Team Management

  • Leadership and management of a small team of fundraising, communications and PR professionals, line management of direct reports (Communications Manager, Fundraising Manager) ensuring clear roles, responsibilities, objectives, standards and behaviours, and enabling the effective dissemination of information; motivation and coaching of the team to deliver and develop both individually, as part of the  team, and within Mission East overall
  • Ensuring clear roles and responsibilities within the Communications & Fundraising  Team and functional organisation with effective and efficient use of resources
  • Ensuring communications & fundraising team access and integration of technical knowledge and expertise available within Mission East and the wider sector
  • Development of employee competence in new/developing communications and fundraising approaches, and ongoing improvement of organisational capabilities (incl. systems and processes)
  • Ensuring continuous improvement and data protection compliance (GDPR, with particular focus on supporter data) via membership of Mission East’s organisational data protection group

Brand, Communication and Fundraising

  • Ownership of Mission East’s corporate brand, ensuring a well understood, distinct and engaging brand proposition that seeks to connect Mission East’s Christian ethos and values with organisational Mission and Vision 
  • Development and leadership of Mission East’s marketing, fundraising and communications plans and activities, ensuring that stakeholders who engage with the brand are informed, inspired and motivated to further support Mission East’s work, new supporters and donors are attracted to support the organisation and Mission East’s supporter base is further diversified
  • Identification, development and delivery of new and innovative fundraising and communications initiatives in Denmark as well as other international settings for the benefit of the communities we work with and to engage, celebrate and thank donors, partners and prospective funders
  • Establishment of a framework to continually receive feedback, evaluate the impact and effectiveness of all marketing, fundraising and communication activities
  • Development of knowledge and understanding of Mission East’s programmes activities and its contribution within the wider relief and development sector in order to maximise philanthropic and partnership opportunities and to stay abreast of impact and accomplishments to share with stakeholder audiences  
  • In coordination with the Managing Director and in accordance with the agreed organisational strategy, development of key outreach, talking points, events, speeches, public/media interview opportunities, and  a universal set of key messages to be used by both the Communications & Fundraising Team and other Mission East staff 


  • Ensure all activities are managed to agreed budgets and are cost effective, including all communications activities that are outsourced to third parties 
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of the marketing, communications and fundraising sector as a whole, via membership and attendance at ISOBRO events, research of key developments and trends and wider networking in order to ensure Mission East’s communications and fundraising remains of a high quality, innovative and exciting 
  • Contribution to a positive, informed and supportive team dynamic and working culture within Mission East’s Copenhagen office
  • Other tasks as may be requested

Selection Criteria:

You will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • A proven track record of fundraising and communication within the relief and development NGO sector as well as administrative tasks for the running of an office
  • Masters level degree in a relevant field or equivalent level of Marketing/Fundraising or Communications qualification
  • Extensive experience and an excellent track record at building and leading the delivery of an integrated communications & fundraising strategy 
  • Extensive experience of building relationships with stakeholders internally and externally
  • A strong track record in delivering increased funding support and supporter engagement  
  • Relevant experience of managing budgets, financial reporting and analysing data  
  • A track record of successfully leading and managing staff, with a proven ability to develop and coach direct reports ensuring they are motivated and fulfil their potential
  • Relevant experience of ME geographies would be desirable

You will display:

  • Excellent Danish and English communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret and explain complex information in a creative and engaging way
  • Strategic thinking – a strong strategist, with the ability to formulate strategies by spotting future trends and opportunities, and an ability to translate these into operational plans
  • Strong analytic skills and a flair for numbers and standards, including relevant Danish law provisions 
  • A working knowledge of good practice leadership and management practice within a Danish context.
  • Excellent self-awareness, and a constructive approach 
  • Team leadership and team building credentials with cross cultural sensitivity and experience integrating and building team dynamics across different geographical locations
  • Flexibility, dynamism, innovation and able to embrace change
  • Self-organisation, proactive and a self-starter and able to perform independently, as well as part of a team 
  • Sympathy with Mission East’s organisational Mission, Vision and Values. Excited by and committed to Mission East as an organisation and an understanding of what motivates supporters to give to Mission East’s work

Other requirements:

  • Candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to live and work in Denmark.
  • Mission East upholds high standards in all aspects of Safeguarding. In view of the nature of this role potentially requiring involvement with vulnerable individuals (including situations where there are potential imbalances of power), you may be required to provide a certificate of good conduct.
  • Mission East upholds high standards in Counter Terrorism (COTER) and sanctions regulation compliance. In view of this role’s potential travel to and remote involvement with our field offices, Mission East will conduct a thorough pre-employment background check of successful candidates, including checking through the SDN sanctions lists
